What to know when designing a link
| Type | When to use it |
|---|---|
| Multimode (OM3/OM4, 850nm) | Inside a building, up to 300–400 metres |
| Single-mode (OS2, 1310/1550nm) | Between buildings and along streets, up to 10–80 km |
| Pigtail | For splicing onto optical equipment |
| Media converter | To bring fibre into a copper network |
What to pay attention to
- Connector type. LC, SC, FC or ST — both ends must match your equipment;
- Polish type. UPC (blue) for data networks, APC (green) for television and passive optical networks;
- Length allowance. Add 2–3 metres — fibre must never be bent sharply;
- Cleanliness. Cap every unused connector — dust destroys the signal.
