PoE switch — how to choose the power budget
One IP camera draws 4–7W on average, a PTZ camera 15–30W. Choose a switch whose PoE budget exceeds your total requirement by at least 30%.
| Cameras | Switch | PoE budget |
| up to 4 | 4+2 ports | min. 60W |
| up to 8 | 8+2 ports | min. 120W |
| up to 16 | 16+2 ports | min. 200W |
| 24–48 | 24 or 48 ports, Managed | 370W and above |
Managed or Unmanaged
- Unmanaged — plug it in and it works. Enough for a home, a small office or a system with 4–8 cameras.
- Managed — VLAN, QoS, SNMP monitoring, remote port reboot. Essential when video, VoIP and office traffic must be separated.
- Layer 3 — routing at switch level; needed in networks with multiple VLANs.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a PoE switch cost?
At ITGS switches range from 69₾ to 17,850₾. A 4-port PoE switch costs 150₾–250₾, an 8-port one 250₾–500₾, a 16-port one 500₾–1200₾, and 24–48 port Managed models start at 1500₾.
How many ports do I need?
Add at least 2 free ports for future expansion. For 4 cameras take an 8-port switch, for 8 cameras a 16-port one. The uplink port is counted separately.
What is a PoE budget and why does it matter?
The PoE budget is the total power the switch can distribute across all ports combined. If 8 cameras need 7W each, you need at least 56W plus cable losses. Always allow a 30% margin.
Do I need a Managed switch?
For a home or a small office an Unmanaged switch is enough. Managed is needed when you split the network into VLANs (for example video on one, office traffic on another, guest Wi-Fi on a third).
Do you install networks?
Yes. ITGS carries out structured cabling, network cabinet assembly, and switch and router configuration. Contact us for a project estimate.
