How to choose a surveillance camera
The choice comes down to three questions: where the camera will be mounted, what you need to see in the recording, and how power and network will reach it.
- Resolution. 2MP (Full HD) is enough for a corridor or a small yard. 4MP is the standard for homes and shops. 8MP (4K) is for when a number plate or a face must be identifiable.
- Type. An IP camera offers better detail and AI features; an HD camera (HDCVI/AHD/TVI) is the cheaper route where coaxial cable is already installed.
- Night vision. Infrared gives a black-and-white image in complete darkness, while ColorVu and Full-Color models keep colour 24/7 if there is minimal ambient light.
- Protection rating. Outdoor mounting requires IP66 or IP67; entrances and public spaces call for a vandal-resistant IK10 housing.
- Power and network. A PoE switch delivers both power and network over one cable. A Wi-Fi camera suits places where cable cannot be run; a 4G model works where there is no internet at all.
- Archive. Four 4MP cameras need about a 2TB drive for roughly 7 days of continuous recording.
